The world we live in right now is filled with technology that no man can even imagine during the early to late 90’s. Over the last 30 years, the video game industry has evolved to become one of the most dominant industries in the world. More children and adults spend time playing video games, consoles and online gaming than ever before. Violence is a prevalent theme in most popular video games. This article discusses the latest literature on the impact of violent video game viewing on aggressivity dependent variables. The advancements in technology is so rapidly increasing that every day, there are multiple new types of technologies that are being used and discovered. One of the main and the most talked about topic that technology has brought is video games. Video games are basically electronic games which gives us a source of entertainment whenever we are feeling down. These video games have been the talk of the town ever since it became invented, and today, video games are a part of children and teenagers’ daily lives. They play these games as a means of relaxation and to ease their minds on to whatever they are thinking. These video games are used as a stress-reliever, or a way to entertain them but of course, everything about video games isn’t good. There are multiple genres of video games, be it a puzzle genre, an action or an adventure genre, the list goes on but one of the most controversial genre of video games are violent video games.
Violent video games are basically these virtual games where you play as a character who, as the genre’s name suggests, do violent things. These games have been talked about by so many people with some people saying that these types of games harm children’s mind and alienates them into doing bad things, into becoming aggressive towards other people while some others disagree. They do not agree that these violent video games cause aggressive behaviour. These key points are the ones that are being argued every single time video games are brought up. There have been multiple controversies about violent video games especially for males who are seen to be violent towards other people just because they couldn’t win a game. Violent or not, it is a must that this topic must be further studied in order to justify whether these games can be violent or not.
We wouldn’t know whether violent video games cause aggressive behaviour by just looking at the arguments that other people say, it is needed that a thorough study must be conducted in order to truly know why these games causes violence. Many people believe that exposure to violent video games causes an increase in aggressive behaviour, cognition and influence. They also believe that violent video game exposure also causes an increase in physiological desensitization to real-life violence and a decrease in aiding behaviour. It doesn’t mean that ALL violent games are considered to cause aggressive behaviour but it is noted that most people are playing these games not to have aggressive behaviour, but to compete and have a good time with either their friends, loved ones, or their families. It is truly a peculiar topic to discuss since there are a lot of misconceptions towards this topic. Violent video games are widespread especially today in the 21st century and it is a must that we study the effects on what these games can bring to the human mind and how we can cope up to the always-changing flow of technology around us and how it relates to violent video games being produced by developers of different video games.
